Memory Foam Mattresses Compared To Others

By Mark Thomasinson

Memory foam mattresses, while gaining popularity over recent years, isn't for everyone. Some people find the differences between memory foam and traditional bedding to be very appealing, while others find the differences too far outside the norm for their taste. Most advertisements for memory foam talk about the benefits of owning this type of bedding compared to traditional bedding, and some advertisers profess that their mattresses are far superior to Tempur Pedic despite the fact that they are much cheaper.

These statements are often not entirely true, as Tempur Pedic's quality is generally unsurpassed. This raises the question: What do we really know about memory foam and its ability to give us a good night's sleep?

Unlike spring mattresses, memory foam mitigates pressure at different point of your body, and conforms that pressure more evenly throughout your body. This happens because the open cells fully compress when you apply pressure, or lie down - the air pressure is released to other cells.

It is because of this science behind the memory foam that evenly distributes your pressure, or your body weight, that you receive that lovely, comfortable night's sleep. It is also from the property of the foam that it contours around the shape of your body.

In contrast to memory foam, the standard innerspring mattress tends to spring or push back when pressed. This kind of push back results in the typical tossing and turning throughout the night. This is especially true for side sleepers. The mattress pushing back causes pressure against the hip and shoulder, which reduces circulation in those and other areas. Eventually the brain tells the body to turn so you can regain optimum circulation.

Unlike the standard mattress, memory foam sinks down instead of pushing back against hips, shoulders, and side. The blood in these areas can maintain optimum circulation. Therefore, the body senses no need to turn so frequently. No tossing and turning means a better night's sleep, which results in that invigorated feeling upon waking.

There are many customer reviews to be found of people who have suffered from this problem, and never thought it was their mattress that was causing the issue.

Memory foam is also temperature sensitive. The foam will become softer and more pliable when heat is applied, such as body heat, therefore allowing the body to conform even more to the mattress while sleeping decreasing pressure and reducing the need to change positions.
