How To Give Personality To Featureless Walls

By Lana Rayburn

When you move into a new home, especially a brand new home, you gain access to blank canvas that can be used to give it a unique identity. You home is a reflection of your personality. It expresses who you are based on what you choose to decorate it with. Even a windowless wall can be used as such a canvas.

What you decorate a windowless wall with can add a surprising amount of atmosphere and comfort to an otherwise unassuming wall.

When deciding on the look and feel of a room, the first stop is usually the paint department at the home improvement store. This is especially important for rooms with relatively featureless walls. Interior rooms that do not have windows usually benefit from softer colors. Whites, as well as subtle blues, greens and yellows are popular choices. You can give rooms extra dimension with stylish wallpaper or stencil art.

After color, the next most striking aspect of a wall is its finish. There is a large variety of different styles available, so you are likely to find one that is particularly suited to the design scheme of your home. Depending on your own style, you might choose smooth over textured, shiny over matte, or patterned over plain. You can even apply your favorite piece of artwork to the wall by having it printed as a full-size mural.

There are also a number of different wall coverings that can used in place of fancy paint and finishes. Wall flats or grass cloth offer repeating, textured patterns along the entire wall, while wainscoting can compliment a painted wall. Other items, such as cords or tapestries, can give a wall color and variety.

To furnish a wall, the most obvious course would be to use art, such as photographs or paintings. On windowless walls, people usually cover more of it by placing multiple pieces, either stacked one over the other or placed at other pleasing, consistent angles. Bookcases or other shelving is a popular choice for interior rooms. Wall-mounted shelves or shadow boxes are also good choices.

In any sort of decoration or design, the key is to be consistent. Variety, contrast and hybrid styles can work if balanced properly, but a lack of a consistent vision will make the home appear chaotic and imbalanced. For a consistent look, always try to choose compatible colors, and if possible, find similar styles, such as frames with similar edges to wooden furniture pieces.

The most important thing you can do for a design scheme is to decide on a style before you start and then stick with it. It can tie the whole thing together and really make something special, even on a windowless wall.
