How To Construct A Car Bed For Your Kid

By Alex D White

Your toddler is growing fast, and with time will inevitably need to make a transition from his/her cot or crib into a bed. When this time comes, you need to think outside the box, to make the transition easy, and the baby cooperative. A car bed is the best gift you can give to your toddler. Here are a few ideas on how to make a car bed for your toddler.

The first step on making a car bed is to come up with a plan, which will encompass the car design you want for your toddler. You can also decide on the color of the car but this usually comes after you have decided on the car design. Some of the designs you can use are a Ferrari, Zonda, Lamborghini or a Porsche.

After you have come up with the type of car you want, then you are required to draw the design. You can draw this design on a piece of your MDF where you want to construct the bed. After you have finished you can now utilize the first piece to cut out your design on the other side of the Medium density fiberboard.

You are then required to put down your template and utilize vice grips or clamps to secure it on the workbench. After that, utilize the jigsaw blade and the circular saw to refine the shaped areas of your car and for the straight edges respectively. You should ensure that you do not go out of the pencil lines borders and ensure that the jigsaw blade remains perpendicular. You should now utilize the first piece as a guide to cut out the other piece identically.

If your car has a slanted front like most cars, cut out an MDF piece to fill in the thickness of the mattress, and allow the bed to move well. You can use swivel as they can allow you to open the front when you need to make the bed. In order to ensure that your toddler does not bang his/her head on any pointing pieces, observe the same criteria.

Once you are done cutting the four major parts, screw and glue them together. Drill some pilot holes to accommodate the screws. For extra stability, ensure that the front and head board of your car are attached to the outside edges of the long pieces.

Now that you have assembled your bed, the next step is to paint with the color of your choice. For the priming and painting of the MDF, make sure that your working area is well ventilated. For the undercoat of the inside and outside of the car, spray evenly, covering the entire piece. Allow the primer to dry, about two hours before spray painting the bed.

To get the complete authentic look, you should add the decals onto the car. You can then use sticker kits that look like wheels, if there is room in the design. Headlight and bumpers stickers can also be quite useful. When you are done you can now transfer the bed to the room where it should be and place the mattress on.
