Ideas For Interior Design For Restaurants

By Leslie Ball

Designing the inside of an eatery can be a challenging task, but it makes all the difference in attracting the right type of customer. How a place looks and feel plays a huge part in the impression it gives and the reviews it gets, not just for the food. These ideas on interior design for restaurants will help restaurant owners to choose the best look for the atmosphere they want to offer.

The first thing that will indicate what type of decor will work inside the chosen location is, of course, what type of food is being served. Decide if the key theme should be based on cultural aspects due to type of cuisine. Alternatively, choose the decor based on the type of customer the food is geared towards, for example teenagers or dining for couples.

When serving food from a particular region, you should always aim to combine elements of the culture reflected in the cuisine in the decor. Look through the history and mythology of the country the cuisine comes from to find things to reference when designing the interior. Try to put a modern spin on any cultural aspects.

A space with high ceilings is a real gem to work with. Go all the way with the drama by fitting floor-to-ceiling windows. Chandeliers will exaggerate the grandeur of the space. A sophisticated monochromatic colour scheme with areas of deep tones like burgundy and purple will add a royal feel to the space. Hints of gold will do the same.

Larger spaces can be well decorated with artwork on the walls or on strategically placed podiums. Try to choose pieces that will spark a conversation between diners so that they aren't thinking about the wait for their meals. Mix different furniture styles, like having a chaise longue in the waiting area and cushioned armchair with carved armrests at the tables. Opt for lamps to create ambiance.

In smaller spaces, mirrors are your best friend. In the right position, a mirror will open up a space and reflect the light for the best ambiance. You really shouldn't need any additional decor once you do mirrors the right way. Think about putting mirrors on the ceiling as well.

For a restaurant that serves high tea or other interesting and unusual dishes, take inspiration from stories of whimsy and fantasy, like Alice In Wonderland. Colourful geometric patterns and shapes work well for a them like this and there are no holds barred for the type of furniture that can be used. Place key pieces from the story for a hint of the theme, such as a large clock in the style of a pocket watch or tea pots in different sizes.

For a restaurant that has more of a chilled vibe, muted colours and dark tones are best. Particularly for an underground artistic crowd, black and white photography on the walls or other interesting modern artwork will add a lot of ambiance. Think about creating a separate space where diners can express themselves while they wait, such as a doodle wall or photography booth.
