Factors To Consider When Making Luminary Candles

By Eula Clarke

Luminaries originated from southwest US and old Mexico. They are paper lanterns that are formed using candles. The candles are then put inside paper bags set in sand. This art is pronounced especially during Christmas Eve. The main purpose of luminary candles is to provide illumination on pathways, stairways and other areas during an event. Over the past years, other countries have borrowed this art. It is now used in celebrations and holidays all over the world. These are some factors to consider when creating luminaries.

Firstly, consider choosing your bag for luminary creation purposes. Lunch-sized brown bags are the best for this activity. These same bags were used in old Mexico. They are considered to create luminaries because of their abilities to block light. Their abilities to allow light shine only through the cutout areas make them ideal for luminaries. Pick colored gift sacks they are the best. You should select gift sacks that are made using thick paper. Opaque paper is an alternative when picking gift sacks. Colored gift sacks are best for occasions such as wedding and prom nights.

Create an appropriate design for your use. Select a front design for your bag. Ensure that the patterns you make do not allow too much space openings on the front of the bag. Note that, too much space opening may decrease the general stability of your bag. This may allow it crumple. Consider creating designs that are easy to cut out. Simple designs are quicker and much easier.

You should transfer your design to a cardboard or a cardstock. By so doing, you will be in a position to use the design of your choice as the pattern on your bag. Tape or glue a colored tissue paper around the cutout pattern. The aim of doing this is to filter light. Another work of tissue paper is to make light appear in a variety of colors.

After you have glued colored tissue papers, it is time to light the luminary. Get ready to light them. You can use several light sources to provide you with enough light for your luminaries. Consider setting approximately 453g of sand on the bottom of the luminaries. The sand is necessary to weigh your luminary down. Substitute sand with a rock or other heavy objects. It is time to set light candles inside the sand. Push them so that they may sit strongly in the bag.

Set you luminaries in a row may be along a driveway, pathway or on stairwells. You may also come up with your own pattern on how to set them. Your choice of pattern may however be influenced by the type of celebration.

You should light your luminary before it is dark. Use your preferred source of light to do this. If your luminaries were to used to welcome guests, or your friends, consider lighting them about 15 minutes before the visitors reach. Do not start lighting the luminaries when you see the visitors

It is wise to cut the design of one of the sides of the bags by a utility knife. You should place a slab of wood, a quilter mat or a cardboard beneath a single layer of the bags when it comes to cutting out your design
