Kitchen Cabinetry Needs Careful Planning

By Loreley G. Weidner

The kitchen is an area of your home that gets used more often than most other areas. So it stands to reason that if your kitchen were more organized and simple to use, your life would feel easier. Get smart about your choices: Here are few vital things we can learn about cabinets. Most important tip is to organize the Cabinets. Now that you have groups laid out on the floor, decide where each item should be stored. Cooking and baking pieces should be kept close to where you do food preparation. Utensils should be in the drawer nearest to the prep area as well. Glassware might be best near the sink or refrigerator. Make a coffee or tea station that includes sugar, mugs and filters, and place it near the water source, if possible. This way you avoid going back and forth across the kitchen for the things you need just to make your morning beverage. Getting Kitchen Cabinetry done is not an easy task but following tips will certainly give a perspective.

Add sconces. Swing-arm sconces above open shelving provide lovely ambient light and offer more personality than standard recessed or track lighting. Ideally an electrician would install them with the cords hidden, though it may be possible to use plug-in versions with cord covers concealing the dangling cords.

Add new hardware. Classic hardware is a worthwhile upgrade, subtly enhancing the look and feel of the entire space. Just keep an eye on the price per piece when shopping, because it adds up fast - especially if you have a large kitchen with lots of cabinets. Count the number of pulls and knobs in your kitchen so you can quickly determine if the hardware you have your eye on will fit your budget - with plenty of beautiful pieces available for $10 and under (like the brass pulls shown here) there is no need to blow the budget

Add storage with simple shelves. If you are lacking upper cabinets and wondering about the best way to do that then consider Rustic wood shelves on metal brackets as they are easily (and cheaply) installed, and provide functional display space for everyday dishes.

Use Roman shades for a finished look. Roman shades add an elegant note to any room and look especially at home in the kitchen, where any softness is most welcome. Have matching shades made for any glass doors in the same room for a cohesive look.

Paint the floor. If your wood floors are not in the best shape and you want to avoid professional refinishing, try painting them instead. White is chic but will show every dropped crumb; pale grey and blue are also classic choices. If you want to get creative, try stencilling a design onto the painted floors.

Finally, make use of Vertical Space. Place hooks underneath cabinets to hold mugs above the countertop, or hang a stemware rack in the same spot for wine glasses. This will free up considerable cabinet space. You could also hang adhesive hooks on the inside of cabinet doors or pantry doors to hold tools such as measuring cups, oven mitts or other kitchen gadgets. Consider using wall space or a ceiling rack to hang pots and pans. Keep in mind that any space you can use to hang something will free up flat space inside a cabinet
