Notes On How To Set A Mole Trap

By Maria Robinson

Pests, especially rodents can cause enormous destruction in a garden within a short span of time. Moles are the most vicious rodents one can have in a garden. Their burrowing nature makes eradication harder. There are methods of curbing rodents infestation in a farm. Poisoning and traps are the most common techniques of terminating rodent pests from a farm. These devices are the most efficient, although it requires knowledge, skills and proper equipment for proper set up. This is why it is important to best know How to set a mole trap.

Specialized tools and equipment are vital in mole control. More importantly is adequate information on the normal behavioral characteristics and biological facts of moles in the ecosystem. Burrows and nests are the habitat structures of moles since they source their food from underground, The common prey of moles is earthworms, grubs, insects and foliage such as roots. Burrows usually have the main passages and the branch passages.

Main passages are most strategic places for installations. Equipment necessary for setting rodents set-up include probing equipments, the trap, a hammer and a garden trowel. The garden trowel plays the role of excavating the ground to make hollow depressions across mole set-ups. Probing equipment can either be long screw drivers or the thumb can be improvised for a probing tool. The hammer is necessary to ramp the device into the solid ground. However the handle of any other garden tool can be replace the hammer.

Traps are effective for moles because they always attempt to re-dig blocked passages. These trappers are designed to obstruct the main run way that rodent is used to passing through. In the trap, there are is a trigger usually strategically set to crush the mole. In the attempt to unblock the tunnel, it comes into contact with the set off pan which releases a spring which crushes the mole

The main run way is the most convenient positions for fixing these devices since the side channels are unlikely to get revisits by the mole. Freshly dug rodent hills are inappropriate for traps since in most cases they are usually the result of foraging expeditions. In the search of the central run way, it is best if more attention is paid to older through ways.

Identification of the central channel can be accomplished by probing through the top soil gently to trace a hollow tunnel. Once the motor way has been established, the trowel is used to make a hollow depression, carefully not to dig through the tunnel. The device should be skilfully placed across the passage, with the trigger appropriately staged to ensure the mole triggers the trap in its attempt to reopen the blocked path way.

Once the motorway has been traced, use the garden trowel to remove the top soil cover directly above the burrow to make a hoe into the ground. It is important to ensure the hole does not get bigger than the trap. Loose soil underneath the run gives the mole a loop hole for escape hence soil at the bottom of the motorway should be removed to reduce chances of escape. It is necessary to fortify the floor of the pathway as well.

Lastly mole set-up is essential in most households due to common rodent pest invasion. Rodent set-ups are the most popular remedies for moles because chemical approaches are not as efficient and guaranteed such as traps.
