By Karen Gibson

Many people buy and collect antiques and they will furnish their homes with items made in England. Quality pieces of furniture not only look good but they last for hundreds of years if they are looked after properly. When you are buying items from antique English furniture dealers there are a number of them to choose from and some care is needed when you are making any purchases.

When you want to purchase an antique piece of furniture you should only buy from an established and reliable dealer. Many pieces are going to be worth a lot of money and many forgeries have been sold in the past. When you are paying a lot of money for an item it is essential that it is the genuine article and not a reproduction.

A lot of different pieces are stocked by the specialist retailers and you can buy tables, dressers and antique chairs. Many retailers will also have a range of office furniture, china cabinets and sideboard units. A lot of the pieces will be one hundred percent original and other will have had some work done by an expert to restore them.

A lot of dealers will have a huge stock for you to choose from and if they do not have your item they may be able to find it. A dealer may be able to buy your item from another dealer or they can go to an auction and purchase a piece for you. Some retailers will also have overseas contacts where they source and buy pieces for clients.

You can find a dealer that sells antiques by searching a few different places. Many towns and cities will have retailers that sell items of furniture on the high street and magazines and newspapers often carry adverts for dealers. The majority of retailers will also have their contact number listed in the telephone directory.

The majority of dealers also have a web site where they will advertise their stock. The web sites will list each piece with color pictures, full descriptions and the asking price. If you find the piece that you are looking for on the net it is advisable to call the dealer to discuss things before you make a final decision and buy.

If you buy from one of the online antique retailers there are some very important things to think about before you make any purchases. You can use a courier company to deliver the item to your address or you can collect the piece in a suitable vehicle. If you use a courier it is essential to make sure that the item is fully insured against loss or damage while it is in transit.

After paying for your purchase it will be necessary to keep all documentation as well as the payment receipt. At a later date you may decide to sell a piece and any potential buyers will want proof that the item is genuine and legally owned by you. If you do not have provenance then a dealer will be happy to value and appraise any items that you wish to sell.
