Incorporating Traditional Pieces into a Modern Home

By Tim Smith

One home design which has been particularly popular in the modern home is a clean, contemporary style. The theme is simplistic, elegant and functional so it is no wonder so many of us wish our bedrooms, kitchens and living spaces to embody a minimalist modern design.

Many interior designers will tell you there are certain features needed to create a modern home. Neutral, clean colours and sleek, simple furnishings are often used to create a stylish yet functional space, while modern, industrial materials such as metal and glass are often used to emphasise the need for economic durability and longevity.

Yet what defines a contemporary style has been altered over the years, as more people begin to experiment with contrasting decor and furnishings usually associated with more traditional themes to create a minimalist yet charismatic style.

Adapting Pine into a modern Style

Using traditional materials such as wood can in fact compliment a contemporary design. Pine wood in particular is renowned for its diversity, enabling it to compliment almost any interior style.

While pine can compliment a contemporary home, it can however be easy to get wrong, and some may find pine furniture can make rooms look somewhat dated, especially if you have older appliances or furniture surrounding it. However there are a few techniques which people have used over the years to incorporate pinewood:

* A little bit of paint can in fact go along way. Using bold, bright colours on existing pine cabinets and furnishings can create a daring contrast with new modern pieces, creating a stylish, unique design. Alternatively using a metallic or textured coating can compliment modern furnishings.

* If your current appliances and accessories around the house are noticeably dated, this can have a big impact on the way traditional materials such as pine look in a room. Switching to new, modern appliances will give your pine furniture a fresh, modern look.

* If you're thinking about buying pine furniture to compliment your contemporary room design, look for pieces which use a brushed steel or metal hardware. However some of you may wish to maintain a sense of character and contrast, for which distressed copper works perfectly to prevent your home looking over contemporary.
