Discover Ways To Use All Natural Stone In Your Home Decor

By Chuck Benderfil

If you're striving to incorporate a western decor in your own home and aren't sure how to begin, one idea you can implement is to incorporate some stone, either natural or bought faux products in your designs. This can be either indoors or outside. either location will give a great feel.

While the outdoor uses are known by most people, you may be surprised to find out you can also use stone to enhance the western theme of your indoor rooms as well. If you don't have much money to devote to creating a theme, this is a great option as you can search for many types of stones outside - just look around you! Naturally you can purchase natural and faux stone as well. Here are some suggestions for indoor uses...

1. Wooden bowls are in style in these modern times and filling them with a diverse selection of stone sizes and colors can be a great look. Fill one bowl, or fill many and combine them into an arrangement for any coffee table, shelf, or other stand.

2. If you're interior decor includes silk flower arrangements, place flower pots on flat stones. Be careful not to use this idea with live plants, as watering without a saucer to catch the water will result in damaged furniture.

3. Create a display of stacked rocks around a wooden wall or other accent, ending with a flat surface area on top where you sit a large flower pot containing a silk flower arrangement or live cactus.

4. Create a stacked stone wall around an area as a display, similar to walls found outdoors. However, make sure the wall is to the scale of the room or area. Too large and it will overwhelm, too small and it will not have the impact you want

5. If you find some interesting, unusual stones, glue them onto a piece of thin board or photo backing, frame them as artwork, and hang on the wall framed in a natural wood colored frame.

6. Glass jars make decorative displays for stones. Fill jars with stones in a decorative pattern and place on a shelf or counter in the dining room or kitchen.

In addition to indoors stones can be used in outdoor landscaping without much skill or vision. This is where a majority of decorators would tend to lean. Stone walls are a awesome addition to give that western feel to your decor. You can create dry stacked stone walls that are simple to construct, elaborate mortared walls, a stone fire pit, or any other variety of uses. Here are some more:

1. Construct a wall using flat stones and stacking them in levels, one above the next. Usually these can be "dry stacked" meaning they are not held together by mortar or other materials. Therefore, don't stack them too tall. The key is starting with a level bottom layer and stacking them as tightly as possible. You might need some trial and error to get the best fit. However, don't rush it. Getting a snug fit will mean the wall will be sturdy and less likely to fall over.

2. An alternate choice to dry stacking is a wall with stones anchored by mortar or concrete. These walls are much more permanent and require extra know-how. You might want to hire a contractor for the task but with research and skills the average homeowner could build a mortared wall as well.

3. Build a rock garden by placing larger sized rocks within your planting beds at varying levels, creating mini planting areas within the larger garden.

4. Create a dry river bed on a slope by buying river rocks at your local home improvement store which are rounded and smooth, and stacking them up the hillside in the shape of a river bed. Combine various sizes and textures of river rocks and natural rocks for a great look.

5. Create many other styles of walls or other stone features by using purchase faux stone products from your local home improvement store. Many styles are available with photos and samples of their uses.

I hope you've become aware that I've only touched on the wide variety of applications of using stone to contribute to the western decor of your home. Get creative. Browse stores and the internet. You're sure to get some great inspiration.
