Standard Sizes of Picture Frames

By Larry Jacobs

I:0:J There are a number of elements to take into consideration when deciding on a picture frame, but the very first consideration, and normally the most noticeable, is exactly what size to buy. This could seem like an easy answer, but you should know what sizes are available before you make your choice.

Measurements for standard frame sizes in the US are indicated in inches. The sizes are represented in terms of the length and width. There are several sizes available on the market or you can get a custom made size for abnormal sized prints. Getting a custom made size is usually more expensive than standard sized frames.

Special occasions such as weddings, pieces of art or beveled mirrors usually look better in a heavier picture frame. These can be gold or silver ornate frames with decorative surfaces. These frames are heavier and made of more durable materials and are often much more expensive. Depending on what you need to frame, these can come in standard sizes as well.

Prior to deciding on the size of the frame, you'll need to think about where it will be placed. For example, some photos or pictures are hung on a wall alone, while others are put up with many different frames. If you require a larger frame, you can put a matte around the picture to adjust for the size.

If you have a small area for your framed piece, you'll want to get as small a frame as possible. One might select bigger frames if they intend to hang the images or photos on a wall, but choose smaller sizes if the image or picture is to be put on a table.

As for digital picture frames, it's important to understand that there are standard frame sizes. The sizes of these frames are indicated in terms of screen display sizes. For instance, there are 19, 10 and 11.5, among others. Technology is constantly changing and the digital picture frame is no different. Different sizes and resolutions are always being made available.
