Process Of Making Structural Foam Objects

By Maryanne Goff

This can be given the description of a low pressure acting process. This process involves plastic, whereby it is first melted, then foamed afterwards. Nitrogen gas or any other foaming agents are best used for this foaming process. From this process comes very large structural foam objects.

This whole process whereby the structures are forms starts with molten plastic penetrating through the cavity. When it enters it foams. The part that is next to the cavity wall also solidifies to form another wall. Foaming for this part stops immediately. However the inner foam is the one that forms the base for this wall.

The whole process is perceived to also be more economic than that of the injection moulding. The injection moulding uses high pressure to carry out the process, which is rather expensive. This type of moulding requires very low pressure. As a result, the moulding equipment used are also very economic.

The low pressure required by the system is due to some measures that have been taken in making the equipment. The moulding wall is modified to be very thick. Because of their thickness, there is pressure being exerted on he liquid. It is also clear that the cavity left is narrow, making the liquid to remain compact. As a result, very little pressure is required to bring up the flow.

Structural foam moulding has a great advantage over injection moulding. This is brought about by the fact that the parts produced by it are way thicker than those produced by the latter. However they are thicker but then their weight is low, ironically. This is caused by the surface cells that burst against the walls and leave the forming plastic still flowing. In the cooling process, they get to shrink and lose more weight too.

This process is initiated through a hot runners system. There are only two good reasons for this. The first one is that the system can be disentangled then reconstructed again. This i=comes up when a desired shape needs to be achieved and the system is not set.

The large machine platens have different parts, that the system is able to reach. The injections therefore keep flowing to the frequent directions that they are supposed to. According to their adjustments, they can also be made to flow in different independent amounts.

The use of this whole process is to produce thermoplastics. The products can either be used indoors or outdoors depending on their use. Electronic housing is an example of these materials being talked about. This is because plastic does not conduct electricity and therefore is safe for this use. Outdoor playground equipment, patio tables, conduit pipes and junction boxes are just the other few products of the process.

Finally, it is important to know the market that this material has. Every institution and school has its product. They might not know at all that they are using a product made from a structural foam process. Schools will purchase playground equipment for their students. Offices and businesses are also a good market for the producers. Electronics, furniture and household ware among others, also provide an open market.
