Is It Just A Fad To Purchase Designer Sofas?

By Cara Stone

Recently it looks like individuals are becoming more discerning than ever before. From the food we eat to the way we dress, no time before have brands become more ubiquitous in our day to day life-style. Similarly, when it comes to furnishings a lot of us will now look for a designer sofas instead of settle for a regular off-the-shelf design. But as many more high-class sofa producers now operate in the market industry it's tempting to ask whether luxury sofas are truly here to survive or whether in-fact they may be nothing more than a modern trend?

Certainly, the ultimate way to deal with this query would be to take into account the background of modern furnishings which extends back to the European Renaissance period. During this time, human comfort was a guiding factor when choosing furnishings initially, leading suppliers to add armrests to traditional home benches. As a newfound taste for home luxury developed, designers started to upholster home furniture for the first time, wrapping layers of horsehair cushioning around wooden frames in a manner that strongly resembles the modern production process. As trade and economic developed continued, sofas swiftly shot to popularity amongst the ruling classes.

A little later on, sofas grew to be much more inexpensive on account of the economic wave which considerably decreased the total cost of production. During this time period, mass manufacturing at a large scale brought the sofa within reach of the typical man giving rise towards the modern-day capitalist economy that we're all knowledgeable about nowadays. Even just in the past few decades, there's been more developments with makers taking advantage of the globalisation of industry to further keep costs down by outsourcing production to reduce cost countries. Broadly speaking, they're both very current advancements within the wider context with the history of sofas.

Thus, it's possible to argue that far from being a modern fad, high-class sofas are in-fact very much a continuity in the background of furnishings, as sofas have often been exclusively bought by the richer segments of community - until quite lately. However with a normal luxury sofa costing anywhere from 6 to 8 times the price of a typical model in a similar style, just exactly why are people rushing to pay more for the same product? This can be the question which lies in the centre of the issue and describes why high-class sofas are not only a current craze.

It appears as though the luxury sofa, not even close to being a current craze, is really a come back to the primary purpose of a sofa as a way to showcase refined taste and riches. As sofas by themselves become more commonplace, many more people are looking towards the luxury end of the marketplace in an effort to distinguish ourselves from our peeps and purchase our interior space. With property prices continuing to increase and our insatiable hunger for high end goods showing no indications of abating, this trend looks set to keep within the years to come.
