The Versatility Of Copper Top Dining Tables

By Kristen Baird

A table must be chosen to compliment the other decor of a room, adding a further element to its visual appeal. Copper top dining tables are a great choice as they are versatile and durable. They offer stunning visual appeal with a variety of rich colors and they also offer easy maintenance.

As a material, copper has great adaptability. It is malleable but strong and solid at the same time. Its malleable nature makes it easy to work with. Coppersmiths follow techniques that have been used for centuries when working with this material. They lovingly hand forge, hammer and burnish it to release its full potential.

This distinctiveness enables such pieces to bring uniqueness to an interior. A tabletop like this fits with many different design styles, from those that are rustic and warm to those that are more elegant. It great deal depends on the elements with which such pieces are combined and they can look equally stunning in a modern apartment or a ranch style farmhouse.

The style of the base has to be chosen to compliment the top and this is why metals like steel and wrought iron are favored. The legs come in varying lengths and designs and a custom finish can be selected. Legs may be straight or curved, thin or thick and sometimes a single pedestal supports the tabletop.

Different finishes are used, with some people preferring an unsealed tabletop and others wanting a sealed one. One that is sealed with wax remains shiny and a patina is prevented from developing. This shiny look can be maintained by regular waxing which adds a protective layer, shielding the surface and preventing oxidation.

The softness of the materials means that dents and abrasions can occur. These can usually be buffed out but many people actually like the aged look this imparts. The hammered look, where the material is hammered in a tight pattern, does not show dents and abrasions easily. This is due to the curvy and dimpled surface texture.

People may be concerned about the level of maintenance required with this type of tabletop. In fact, maintenance is simple and all that is required is regular dusting and periodic waxing to keep it in shape. Abrasive cleaners should not be used and are in fact not necessary at all. As with tops made from any other material, care should be taken with hot items and they should be placed on a trivet or coaster. Acidic foods can affect the patina if spills are left for some time.

When choosing a supplier it is important to find out about any guarantees, return policies and shipping procedures. Many manufacturers of these pieces usually allow for some customization. There are usually various options with regard size, shape and type of bases chosen. This results in an individualized piece perfectly suited to a particular room design.
