By Enid Hinton

Gophers are small animals that resemble rodents. They live beneath the earth in burrows and are sometimes confused with moles. However, differences can be seen in their body structure and the families in which they belong. Their level of destruction is as alarming if not taken care of on time. They can destroy garden due to the many tunnels they dig in a day. To avoid problems with the rodents, plans should be established on how to set a gopher trap and eliminate the pests for good. Home owners cannot deal with the menace on their own, they should ask for advice and assistance from specialist who will assure the capture of these annoying pests.

There are specific habitats where the rodents live. They prefer a moist surrounding to a dry one with soft soil which requires less effort while excavating. They spend most of their time excavating in search of food. The many networks formed are called gopher towns. The creatures are herbivores where they consume edible vegetation and small roots. However, they can eat insects or nuts as an alternative. Moreover, they have a great sense of smell and perfect hearing.

Presence of these rodents can be known by the mound of dirt on the surface. However, sometimes only a hole will be seen with no fan shaped dirt next to it. It could be tricky for unspecialized individuals to locate a hole by a gopher and not confusing it with a hole made by a mole. These creatures are very intelligent and after feeding, they usually block their holes.

Several methods can be used to trap gophers including:

Utilization of toxins. For instance, making use of strychnine. After use, one ought to purify their hands. Also, if the rodent gets harmed and passes on, it ought not to be left for different creatures to eat it as it will result to their demise too.

Flooding their tunnels. Using a hose, one can pour water inside the channels until the creature pop out. A person should be ready to kill the gophers immediately as they run out of their holes for safety.

Gopher traps. The method requires a systematic procedure to be effective. These snare can easily be bought at any stores. To install one:First, an individual should possess the necessary equipment, that is, the shovel, gloves and the trap itself. Second step is to locate an active channel. It can be done by looking for fresh heaps of moist soil on the ground surface. Third step is to locate the tunnel itself. The burrows might sometimes be blocked thus seeing a moist heap of dirt might be of less help. Thus, an individual should make sure to track channels that will direct them to the main one.

Fourth step is making a big hole using the shovel to ensure the burrow is fully exposed. Fifth step is installing the trap itself in several pass ways. They should be in a way that the gopher is assured to pass through it and not beside it. During installation, it is advised to wear gloves to prevent the rodent from detecting the human scent which will avoid sabotaging the entire procedure. The last thing to do is waiting till the snare does its job of trapping and killing the creature.
