How You Can Use Wedding Luminary Bags

By Ruthie Livingston

Almost every wedding one attends will have a specific theme, which will either be apparent through decor or through use of color. A lot of couple like to put their own personal touch into their decor, and a trendy way to do so these days is through use of wedding luminary bags. It is a simple and cost-effective way to add to the ambiance of the affair and also be romantic.

A luminary bag is a paper bag with cut outs in shapes, letter or patterns. A tea light or flameless candle is placed into the bag and the light shines through the cutouts, creating a beautiful dim glow. Many of these bags placed together has a beautiful effect. They can be used in a number of ways.

You can place these pieces on the tables of your guests or use them strategically on shelves throughout the reception on the wall. Put them on the floor to create corridors and aisles by lining them up alongside one another. If there is a staircase at the entrance of the reception room, place a bag on each stair to highlight the entrance of the bridal party. You can also hang them at different levels from the ceiling by using nylon thread, or create a clothes line of sorts and clip the bags on horizontally.

They can be purchased online and come in various sizes with different patterns. Hearts and snowflakes are quite popular, which could work for a winter wonderland celebration. Some designs are less mainstream and some are very abstract.

You could also opt to make them yourself. This is a nice activity to bond with your significant other or with the bridal party in the lead up to the celebrations. Purchase the paper bags from before or make them yourselves for added creativity!

That's another way to add a personal touch, by finding different materials to create the bags in the first place. Consider using book pages, paper with musical scores or painting the bags with watercolors or inks before strategically placing the cutouts. Specially chosen images can be printed onto flat paper first before turning it into the bag. Other materials needed would be glue or tape to put the bag together and also a blade to create the cutouts. Tea lights could also be purchased in colors that match the chosen color scheme for the event.

Put a letter on each individual bag to spell out the names of you and your spouse. You can make the letters very bold and simple or really fancy by using calligraphy cutouts. Place the names on a table at the entrance to the wedding reception for guests to admire.

Another idea is to use cutouts of a symbol or design that is personal to the couple. This could be as simple as a specific type of flower, perhaps the flower the groom first bought the bride when they were courting or the flowers they have as part of the wedding decor. It could be as complicated as an elaborate family crest, which would be a great way to start the bride and groom's journey together as a family.
