Tips For Efficient Space Planning In Your New Home

By Kevin Reynolds

Thanks to the shrinking supply of single-family properties and an ever-rising population, most house moves now involve downsizing to a smaller home. In fact, this might very well be your only option if you're planning to relocate. Stressful as that sounds, it's a cue for you to rethink your approach towards space planning Oakland.

Don't let TV shows or magazines fool you that small space living is a walk in the park. Moving to a place that has less square footage than your current home will require lots of compromise and creativity. In particular, trust that you'll not be able to move with most, if not all of your current furniture. To help you work around the limitations, it would help to invest in pieces that can work in a variety of ways, such as:

Nesting Tables: Making the most of your limited space will present the dilemma of how to get rid of your dining table without losing its utility. Still, a set of nesting tables will provide more than an answer. Not only will the pieces serve you beyond the dining room, their combined surface area will also be higher. Plus, their ability to stack together while not in use will prove priceless.

Ottoman: There's no doubt that ottomans are the most versatile pieces of furniture ever invented. Besides serving as footstools, they can be used as side tables or extra seats, with some even having room for storing stuff underneath. You can also combine several of them to form a sleeping area in times of need. An ottoman will also add an element of luxury into your space.

Prior to the actual move, make sure to sort through your stuff and toss out unnecessary items. That of course means anything you hardly ever use or need. This way, it'll be less of a headache figuring out where to keep the rest of your belongings. On that note, take a look at some ideas for achieving efficient storage in your home:

Go Vertical: Don't let the lack of floor space fool you -- there's more than enough real estate for your storage woes. In fact, a couple of floor-to-ceiling bookcases might be all you need. Still, there's no harm in taking advantage of those areas above the windows by installing bracketed shelves.

Make the Most of Your Bedroom: Having your bed retrofitted with drawers will ensure the space below doesn't go to waste. Alternatively, just look for bins that will fit perfectly underneath if you're on a tight budget. And if neither of these prove practical, consider upgrading to a bed with built-in storage.

Baskets: These come in all manner of designs, so it shouldn't be hard to find ones that will fit with your decor. Mounting them on your walls will provide storage space for items that need to be organized and out of sight, such as your jewelry collection. You can also place one or two baskets on top of the refrigerator as well.

You'll be surprised to find that living in a smaller home does have its benefits. Think about it -- less square footage means it won't take as much effort to maintain as your current house does. Making good use of the space will be daunting, but it'll stretch your creativity to the maximum.
