The Appeal Of Reclaimed Wood Furniture

By Lucilla Cresci

Reclaimed wood furniture is great for your pocket and good news for the environment. Fashionable beautiful and individual products made from this material will give your home an individual touch.

In past times timber was widely used for major construction, it was cheap, strong and freely available. Particularly in agriculture, its use was the norm. As farming practices have become more large scale and industrial, many old timber framed buildings have been knocked down and the materials used to make them can be reused.

Modern forestry focuses on the production of softwoods, quick growing but without the durability or beauty of the more traditional timbers. Given the competition for growing space for crops this is an understandable shift. Once you decide to use reclaimed timber you have a wide choice of strong and attractive possibilities.

Wood is hard-wearing and ages gracefully. Unlike some modern materials minor damage can be repaired. Sometimes knocks and scars can enhance the attractiveness of a piece by adding life and a sense of history to an otherwise inanimate object. Some timbers are noted for their grain, others for their color, still others for outstanding strength. All give vibrancy and depth to any home as the sense of a once living material will add warmth.

It is up to you if you chose to make a piece yourself, or buy an item that suits you. If you do have the skills and time to do your own work you will find a wealth of inspiration from photographs on the internet. Either way you will end up with a beautiful item that fits with your everyday life and needs.

It is impossible for any two pieces of wooden furniture to be identical; every item will reflect the uniqueness of the raw material used in its manufacture. This is true whether you made it by yourself, a bespoke order from a master craftsman or a ready made purchase from the web or a local shop.

It really makes no difference if your home is contemporary and urban or traditional and in the country. There will be a way you can use reclaimed wood furniture to enhance your personal style and tastes. When you do so you will know that you have given additional life to something that would otherwise have been discarded and you will have an attractive piece which will last a lifetime and may even become a family heirloom.
