Interior Design - Not Just For The Rich

By Sasha Peters

Are you afraid that a professional interior designer will laugh at your home decor or turn their nose up at your ideas when it comes to interior design? Do you think that you need to have a college education or some sort of degree to be taken seriously when it comes to style and space as it pertains to interior design? While you might think that your tastes might not be accepted by professionals or the gurus of design, the truth might be something that surprises you.

Stand up and be bold! What you like and what is pleasing to you is every bit as important and valid as what you might see in some of the most prestigious magazines and online resources. What is most important is that your surroundings are appealing to you and if what lies within your four walls brings you pleasure then there's a very good chance that it will bring someone else pleasure also. You are an interior designer by default and without even knowing it.

For instance, when my wife and I were first married we didn't have two pennies to rub together. We were often behind on the rent and getting a pizza that didn't come frozen was a big treat for us. Yet, my wife has a talent. She is very good at arranging furniture in the house and taking the most mundane things and creating beauty. Perhaps you have this same talent. Maybe you have the same gift of throwing a few household items together and making it into something that is extraoridinary.

Back in those days, my wife would find some Christmas lights that someone was going to throw out, some pine boughs from the edge of the yard and she would turn our horrible little apartment into a winter wonderland. She would take a decorative throw blanket that we used to cover ourselves when we watched tv on cold winters nights and she would place it over throw away end table, add a few framed family photos and some candles and provide a pleasant focal point in the corner of the room. She's amazing, I think!

You see, it doesn't have to cost a lot of money to create beauty in your home. All it takes is inspiration and a desire to make your home more cozy and pleasant. Yes, women do have a bit more talent in this area than men but we appreciate what you ladies do with the meager resources that we give you.

Money does help when it comes to buying new furniture and when interior design starts to move into the area of taking out walls and expanding doorways. But a little time spent in a thrift shop or looking at magazines and online resourced for inspiration when it comes to interior design can give you the creative boost that you need when it comes to changing the interior design of your own home. Just remember that interior design is all about what is appealing to you and you are your own interior designer whether you believe it or not.
