Planning your dream kitchen - the first steps

By Richard Burke

The kitchen has changed beyond recognition from the small functional workspace of yesterday to the social hub of the home it has become today. Yes, the essentials stay the exact same - a sink / wet area, food preparation zone and refrigeration. But added to this is the growing use of the kitchen area as the fulcrum of the home.

New house builds have seen a pattern for open plan living where kitchen, dining room and family room are opened up to generate one large living space where all the family can come together to share the same living space. More aged houses are seeing extensions added in, and internal walls taken out to create this extremely popular open plan living. This has resulted in kitchens being created to not only be a highly functional space but a stunning adornment to the house.

The initial step in planning a new kitchen is to consider how you live with and use your kitchen. Or even more importantly how you would like to live with and use your dream kitchen. Think of how many folks will likely be utilizing the kitchen, from young kids who will grow and develop within the kitchen (and frequently check the quality of structure!), to teenagers raiding the refrigerator at all hours of the day, and to grown ups who will use the kitchen as a work zone to produce dinners and run the property and then as a refuge at day's finish having a glass of vino to talk about the day just gone and prepare themselves for another day.

Exactly what their and your wants from the kitchen? Do you see your self as a frustrated chef, and just want the proper environment to develop gastronomic delights? Or will the reheat function on your micro-wave be the extent of your food preparation? Clearly your budget will decide the kind and quality of kitchen appliances you purchase however it is without a doubt that the higher the quality of kitchen appliance the better and less complicated they'll be to use. Attempt to create a list of the kitchen appliance types you wish to have. Not necessarily the makes or models but whether or not you would like a range cooker or built-in cooker and independent hob.

With this data it is possible to now start to consider the style of kitchen you'd like and as to whether construction works will need to be undertaken. This is where things can get interesting, and the fun really begins!
