Selecting The Perfect Dining Room Furniture

By Daniel Akinson

Unlike the furniture in other rooms of a home, the dining room table and chairs are generally subjected to less recreational use and therefore tend to last a lot longer. Therefore, figure out everything you need in a dining suite before you start looking.

Whether your style preferences run to the sleek and contemporary steel and glass, the solid, dark tones of Baroque reproduction or the clean, wooden lines of craftsman and shaker models, you will find furniture to suit your needs. If you have a smaller space, you may want to consider having a folding table that can be stored out of the way when you do not need to use it.

A Bit of Old Fashioned Style

If you want to have an old-fashioned, elegant dinner, invest in a period style suite decked out in veneered solid wood. As you consider your purchase, think about the diversity that your table and chairs should have for your room. In the majority of homes the dining suite must be able to handle a variety of needs. As the day goes on, your table might serve a variety of functions, from a children's play area, to arts and crafts, to a workspace, to a sewing area, in addition to all the mealtime possibilities that can play into this particular dining room situation. At the same time, you still need it to be ready for a sophisticated, classy dinner from time to time.

Whatever your table will be used for think about the wear and tear that it will be required to endure, a solid wood surface can be hidden under a linen tablecloth, but it is very difficult to hide the dings on a beautiful veneer. If you insist on a table top that will easily be marred, be sure to invest in a table pad to protect it. In formal dinners, use placemats and an elegant table cloth, removing the pad.

* Contemporary Chic

Modern designs are characterized by their clean, simple lines and uncluttered embellishments. You will have plenty of choices if you decide on this style. Glass, chrome and steel are all favorites of this design, you want to keep the theme clean and streamlined.

You can really save money and keep your furniture safe with a lacquer or laminate that will hold up against scratches and can wipe clean easily - if you have children that are going to use the table for whatever reason, that is going to be a very good option. Modern styles are displayed best with any coverings, however it can be accented with a bold tablecloth for those special occasions.

Be mindful of materials such as glass if you have children, and make sure that all glass pieces are shatter-proof. If you do not like wiping up finger prints, there are glass finishes that are textured to hide the evidence of little hands. Some modern designs are constructed of cast iron; which can be striking in a modern room. But keep in mind that these pieces are often very heavy to move.
