Don't Be Afraid To Move - Stress Reducing Tips

By Erin Song

Moving can be found near the top of the list of one of life's biggest stress-inducers. We all hate it: the last-minute rush to pack your possessions into boxes; the dread that you won't remember the "safe" place where you put your valuables; the inevitable breakage and leakage.

But moving doesn't have to be a blood pressure booster. Follow these tips if you want to have a low-stress move.

Plan strategically. Yes, you do need to think about logistics before the day you move. Make three mental piles when you make an inventory of your possessions namely stuff you need daily, stuff you need access to weekly or monthly and stuff for long-term storage.

Label logically. Mark every box A, B or C, based on the three categories above. Include the month and year and a note as to the contents. If they are fragile, say so.

Pack carefully. Don't use newspaper - try bubble wrap or foam wrap instead. Use protective tape and lots of padding for framed pieces and other artwork and don't overpack or underpack. Avoid packing flammables as well since they can easily overheat and explode.

During the move, place irreplaceable items such as photos, legal documents and jewelry should be placed in a special box and taken with you separately.

You should move smartly. First, move desks, bookcases, cabinets, and utility shelves. That way, when you unpack your stuff, you will have somewhere you can place them.

Immediately unpack the "A" boxes. This includes that special box you brought separately. The "B" boxes can be placed in the appropriate room and deal with them the following weekend. All the "C" boxes should then be placed in the garage, a back room, or just in a corner. You can deal with them later.

Go get help. You might consider seeking help from a packing and shipping center if you are feeling overwhelmed. The pros are aware of how to safely crate or pack your precious heirloom, artwork, and furniture to minimize the risk of damage.
