Fun Ideas For Fish Ponds Or Water Features In Your Garden Area

By Margie Ball

Outdoor water features have had a long history in landscaping issues, reflective pools and fishponds. When you see people erecting successful ponds you might feel jealous and wish to erect the same in your landscape. The good news is that there are various ways of approaching this home addition. There are many options to go for with regard to budgetary concerns, space available and the overall impact. Here are some cool ideas for pond water features.

There are many tricks and tips that can be used towards successful pond-keeping and looking after water sculptures. These tips cover husbandry and hardware aspects that are to either be erected or maintained in the case of already existing fishponds. One of the important hardware aspects is the water pump. Fish require constant supply of oxygen hence the supply of oxygenated water is paramount.

One of the necessities required while thinking about ponds is a water pump. Few garden ponds especially those that have some good fish population can survive without some form of constant aqua supply. Fish need oxygen and it is only through constant aqua supply that you will find your fish alright. Do not switch off your pump at night. The general-purpose pump is most suited for medium sized ponds and usually come with a fountain jet.

The two common types of pumps used are the direct drive and the magnetic drive. The direct drive provides large volumes of power and is able to work effectively in ponds requiring large pressure heads. The magnetic drive is a better choice for garden ponds since they are inexpensive, provide enough power and they also serve for a longer period.

Submerged pumps that are used for water movement and aeration in the fishponds can be protected by simple and cheap pre-filters. Most of these pre-filters are lowly maintained and they offer very effective service. They are commonly referred to as bucket filters for they only require a bucket, some coarse materials, polyester pads and a good pump guard.

Hiding some of the unnatural components of ponds require some levels of creativity. Soft cables can be buried only if they are enclosed in a hard conduit while hard tubing can easily be buried to prevent exposure. If you have any aquatic hardware, ensure that they blend well with the landscaping or the garden furniture. The electrical cords should be covered effectively to prevent any chances of electrocution especially for the aquatic animals.

Potting plants will also effectively improve the aesthetic look and value. Some plants may grow well when fully submerged while some will do better when partially submerged. Unlike terrestrial plants, aquatic plants derive their nutrients from almost every part of their structure hence they do not need soil. A good idea is to use gravel and stones for all potted plants.

Fishponds are a little bit complicated but you can easily achieve any of your plans if you carefully plan. Tasks that you feel you are not able to amicably out, it would be prudent if you seek advice from pool professionals. For an attractive looking outdoor water feature and healthier aquatic animals, carry out timely maintenance activities.
