Learning All About Sash Windows: An Invention Made To Last

By Glen Middleston

Made from very simplistic components, sash windows are created with a basic frame with two window panels, an upper panel and a lower panel. These panels are attached to sliding tracks in the frame which allow them to be easily moved up or down.

There are a few different varieties of this window, the original being broken up into many square panels that are each separated by narrow bars. This creates a stunning window pane effect that can give a decorative effect on a home.

These paned sash windows were used as far back as the 1600s and became quite popular in England. The invention of this window is in fact accredited to an English scientist, Robert Hooke. You will notice that they are widely used especially in Victorian and Georgian style homes, often featuring a classic arrangement of four rows with three panes each.

More popular for today's society is the more simplistic double paned sash. These windows are basically the same as their older versions; however, they have become more durable and energy efficient and are often made from aluminum for this reason.

Though we are living in a day of modern technology where new discoveries and inventions are brought to light almost daily, it is amazing that the sash window is still so widely used. It may not exist in the exact same form that it once did, but the main idea of Robert's invention is still the same. This only proves the true ingenuity of his idea, that it has been able to withstand the test of time though all these years.

Many reading this will likely note that their homes have installed sash windows. When passing through a city or town, you can note that many businesses and churches also make use of these windows. Loved for their simple design and easy to clean features, these windows have lasted for years and will likely continue to be used for some time to come.
