Do Your Homework When Hiring Movers

By Adriana Noton

Moving can be exciting especially if you are going somewhere new and exciting or if it's taking you to a place with new income possibilities, it also can be extremely stressful, very hard work and pretty expensive. This is especially true if you are thinking about hiring movers to get the job done. If this is the first time you've ever worked with a moving company you need to be very careful with who you choose to have take care of your valuables.

You need to make a list of companies that you are considering. You can find them in the phone book, online, through friends, co-workers and family members. It's very important that you perform a background check on each one that you have on your list. You can do this by simply calling your local Better Business Bureau or go to their website to see if there are any major complaints filed about the companies you have on your list.

The next step then is to call those that are left on your list. You are going to want to get estimates from each of the ones you still have on your list. You especially are going to want an estimate if you are going to another state because this is really where the cost is going to come into play.

When you talk with each estimator you need to request they give you a binding estimate. This is an estimate that will not go over by the end of the move. In other words, no matter what might happen or change during the move, the price is not going to be affected. If you don't do that you'll end up with a non-binding one and these will generally end up going over the estimate by the end of the move.

While the estimator is visiting you need to get as much information out of them as you can. You should make sure that they also don't hire contractors to actually do the move. When you are hiring movers it's important that the people doing the work, work for the company and aren't independent.

Ask them how long they have been in business. It's best when hiring movers, that you go with a company that has been in business for a minimum of 10 years. Before they leave you need to make sure that you have your estimate, the full company name, all the contract information needed, references, their carrier license number and a brochure on your rights that all movers should give prospective clients, this is required by law. Also, make sure they are properly insured and offer proof.

You should also make it know to the estimator that you are taking notes and keeping all of the information to help you make a decision on which company you are going to work with. If they happen to know that you are doing your homework, they are definitely going to be a lot more honest with you.

Once you have done all of this, you can then go over your notes and get on with hiring movers that you are going to feel that you can trust the most. Call the company you have decided to go with and let them know you have your inventory list for them and your moving date. After you have done that you are set to start your move.
