Safeguarding Your Back Garden From Hailstorms

By Mac Spaugh

Having a garden can be a wonderful and joyful thing but it could all disappear in an instant from the weather. There isn't anything that can be done to stop the weather conditions from happening, and many a garden has been destroyed because of that. Naturally, we won't always have bright and sunny days or we would be living in a desert with nothing beautiful to experience.

Consider each of the places that never get any rain in the least, and the gardens that are not able to grow there. However, your own garden could go all up in smoke with a single night of a violent hailstorm. Generally there is much joy when it first begins to rain, given that you won't have to water your plants by hand. You may enjoy the natural water falling from the heavens until you notice it starting to turn to ice. It is a sensation of dread, especially if you experienced having your garden destroyed by a ten minute hailstorm.

The only solution in your case could be to take measures to protect your garden from such a storm. One method of protection is to employ a wire mesh screen that you can rollout and cover your garden once it starts to rain. The water out of the rain will drip through but if it turns to hail, the screen will protect the plants. It's not a fix for everyone, as it is not easy to build, and will cost some money. If you haven't been hit with a hailstorm, you can do something similar to this.

If your backyard garden is already wiped out, it is advisable to find a way to help recover your plants. There isn't a whole lot that can be done, other than try to get their health back with delicate care, which will take a while. You aren't going to know how well your plants will pull through after a bad hailstorm. If you expect more inclement weather, then you should keep them covered and protected from the elements. Any time you're setting up your garden, you ought to have a good idea how often hailstorms occur in your area. If you know the standard weather conditions, you can have an emergency plan to prevent your plants from getting damaged. Even if doesn't necessarily happen very often, you should be prepared.

It will generally take the loss of your garden one time because of a hailstorm to realize you should have done something. You need to take preemptive measures so that the worst is actually avoided. You worked very hard on your garden, so you don't want to see that work end up being for nothing.
