Light fixtures must be in their correct working state. This applies to all the light fixtures within the perimeters of your residence. If there are lights that are still not working even after replacing the bulbs, it will be essential to check the wiring providing power to this place.

Access to all rooms must be made as easy as possible. Access can only be made possible by ensuring that anything that may restrict access to the furnace, electrical panel and water heater are removed. An inspector must be in a position to remove the electrical panel cover.

Go in to the furnace and check the condition of your filters. Be sure to note which filters are old or not in the right working condition in order to replace them. The register will also need to be vacuumed.

Go to each room and check the windows located in them. All windows must be easy to open. The locks should be in place. Make sure to remove all permanent security locks and to loosen any windows that may have been painted shut during a past painting job.

While at the windows, you should also check to make sure they all have window screens. Note down the windows that do not have the screens and make arrangements to have them put in place. Check the current condition of all window screens to guarantee that there is nothing wrong with them.

Once done checking the windows, proceed to check the doors in all rooms. All doors either leading in to the house or to different rooms should be checked. You will be checking whether the door knobs are tightly in place and whether all handrails are firm. If any is found to be weak, make a point of screwing it in to place.

You will need to clear the way to the attic panel or basement. You can be sure that your inspector will want to enter in to all these places. If either of them is being used for storage purposes, make sure that you have removed all items that could inhibit movement.

Smoke detectors and alarm systems are very important in any house. For safety purposes, ensure that each floor has a minimum of one smoke detector. The detector should also be working as it will be tested during the house examination in an attempt to determine how safe this house is.
