Old branches can present a potential hazard as they can fall on the roof or injure people around. In addition to this, they can be a source of obstruction when driving. Worst still, it is dangerous to allow them grow over to utility lines, and particularly the electricity one. Pruning is very important for a number of reasons. The top three reasons why you must continuously prune your trees include safety, aesthetic and health. As for safety, you do not want a branch obstructing you when driving, or getting to contact with utility lines or old branches falling on your roof or injuring people.

Strategic pruning or even crown thinning can save an infected plant and improve airflow. Lastly, it helps bring out and maintain shapes and appearance that improves aesthetics of the compound. It should also be done to restrict growth, for plant training and improving the quality of stem, foliage, flower and fruits.

You should not clear off more that quarter of crown at a times. If it is for raising the crown, leave at least two-thirds of foliage intact. The crown reduction is only done when necessary. The trick is to cut off the smaller branches early enough.

Normally, you should focus on cutting branches when they are still smaller to avoid scars and possible infections. The plants with diameters of less than five centimeters are the best to cut. The plants with a diameter of ten or more centers are not good candidates unless they preset hazard or have become old.

Crown raising is normally done to clear way for pedestrians of for any other reason. You however need to be sure to retain two-thirds of all leaving branch. When it comes to crown reduction, it should only be done when completely necessary. The branches that have reached one-third in size of the stem are the ones to be removed. If over half of the foliage has to be removed from a branch, then it is better to cut off the whole branch.

In all this, you should make sure to retain the collar of the branch. The cutting should also be done at an appropriate angle to avoid injuring the plant unnecessarily. Otherwise, tree trimming can be easier than imagined. It does not require specialized skills, just a little practice.
